Unless a determined effort is made to provide the Jewish youth with religious education under the guidance of English speaking rabbis and pedagogically trained religious school teachers, they may grow up “agnostics and atheists”, according to Louis Marshall, Honorary Chairman of the Campaign to raise $1,000,000 for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
“It is worth noting that the Seminary has never before made an appeal. Should the seminary now fail from lack of financial support it would, indeed, be a sad day for the adherents of Judaism. The responsibility rests on every Jew and must not be shirked.
“Unless we are willing to alienate our young people, unless we are willing to make them agnostics or atheists, then the time has come for the Jews of America to preserve the institution which is best calculated to foster Judaism on this continent among the vast majority of the America Jews”.
The campaign for the seminary $1,000,000 endowment fund will begin on November 11, On that day seventeen fraternities composed of Jewish college men and women, will organize for participation in the campaign. During this week 150 rabbis and laymen, under the direction of Dr. Harold Korn and Rabbi Samuel M. Cohen, will address every Jewish synagogue, fraternal and mutual benefit society in behalf of the endowment fund.
