London (Jun. 14)
The Joint Foreign Committee has received today the following cable from its Secretary, Mr. Lucien Wolf, who is now in Vienna:
“Before leaving Bucharest I submitted to the Roumanian Government the telegrams of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency concerning the pogroms, and asked for an investigation of the matter. Inreply I received the following telegram from the Roumanian Foreign Minister: “Except for the few small incidents of which you know, there is no anti-Semitic movement in Roumania, which approaches in the slightest degree pogroms. These false and extravagant statements are exceedingly regretable. I will be grateful if you will contradict them.
“Regarding the alleged bunring of a Jewish woman, the government knows nothing, but has arranged with Mr. Foldermann to undertake a rigorous inquiry, (Signed) Duca.’
“So far as Bucharest is concerned,” Mr. Wolf’s telegram continues,” I can testify that there is absolute tranquility and perfect security for the Jewish people. Anti-Semitism exists, but the government is vigilant and effective measures have been taken, “
In connection with this telegram it will be recalled that the Roumanian paper “Adverul” had the following to say, recently, anent the denials of the Roumanian Government:
“Vienna has committed certain exaggerations because no direct reports from Roumania were possible. However, the denial of the Roumanian Government will remain ineffectual because it denies flatly everything, while, as a matter of fact, sixty Jews were seriously wounded. They were thrown from the windows of trains going at full speed. Trains were also kept for long periods at various stations so that the drunken anti-Semites might have plenty of time for their doings. It is also true that during this time the Roumanian authorities did not extend any help to the attacked and maltreated Jews. No ones lives now behind a Chinese wall, and the denial of the government is, therefore, in vain and a disgrace. It would be much better if the truth were admitted and the guilty ones punished, especially those officials who completely forgot their duty. On the other hand, the protest of the Jews abroad is entirely justified.”
