Roumanian Government Sends Special Investigators to Transylvania

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

The Roumanian Government has despatched a special investigating committee to Transylvania, under the direction of the General Inspector of the Roumanian Secret Police, (Siguranza) Parisianu, for the purpose of energetically looking into the anti-Semitic excess, which occurred during the second half of May. Jewish leaders, representing the Jewish population of Roumanianproper and also that of Transylvania were invited to serve on the committee.

The Roumanian paper “Uj Kelet” confirms the fact that the committee has already started its activities. It regrets, however, the fact that the Government waited more than a month before taking action. The paper comments that it seems that the Roumanian Government has finally decided to put an end to the anti-Jewish excesses by means of the criminal law.

It further states that the Roumanian Foreign Minister Duka, on the basis of a memorandum submitted to him by Under-Secretary Tartarescu, has pointed out the tremendous loss of prestige suffered by Roumania abroad on account of the anti-Jewish events, and it regrets that it was only because of this that the Government was impelled to take action. Up till now the repeated warnings and interventions of the Jewish Federation of Transylvania, as well as of other Jewish bodies, have been without avail.

The Roumanian Government is now even ready to pay indemnities to those Jews who were the victims of he excesses, according to the paper.
