The Senate of the German University in Prague has issued instruction that the Academic Council, which is to be elected from among the students, must consist only of members who are of German nationality, aiming to exclude those students who are registered as of Jewish nationality.
As soon as this decision of the Senate was announced, Dr. Ludwig Singer, President of the Jewish National Council in Czechoslovakia, called on the Minister of Education, Dr. Markovitch, protesting against this action of the University Senate. He pointed out that this is a violation of the constitutional guarantee of the principle of equality of all citizens. In connection with this Dr. Singer complained to the Minister against the authorities of the German University prohibiting the students to register as belonging to the Jewish nationality.
The Minister of Education in reply stated that he considers the action of the German University authorities as unconstitutional and promised to investigate the matter. The Jewish population of Czechoslovakia, according to the Czechoslovakian constitution, is afforded the right of registering either as of Czechoslovakian nationality or of Jewish nationality.
