The first session of the newly elected Assefath Ha’nivcharim, the National Assembly of Palestine Jews, was opened here Monday night in the Theatre Zion in the presence of 201 deputies and a large number of guests.
Dr. David Yellin, former president of the Assembly, submitted a report of the work of the Assembly during the five years of its existence. M. M. Ussishkin, director of the Jewish National Fund, who recently returned from a trip to various European countries, read a paper on the relation of Palestine to the Diaspora.
Col. Frederick H. Kish greeted the Assembly on behalf of the Zionist Executive in Jerusalem, Mr. Nurock on behalf of the Palestine government and Mr. Krishevsky on behalf of General Storrs, governor of Jerusalem.
A proposal to create a praesidium as the governing body of the Assembly, which would include representatives of all parties and factions, was submitted. M. M. Ussishkin, Mayor Dizengof of Tel Aviv, Mr. Meyuchas, Mr. Rosoff, Mr. Salomon Kaplansky, Rabbi Fishman, Mr. Eisenberg, Mr. Sprinzak and Mr. Levkowitch were nominated as members of the praesidium. Mr. Ussishkin declined the nomination.
Thirty-three thousand eight hundred and forty-five persons, representing 52.3 per cent of the total number of electors, participated in the elections to the National Assembly. The two Jewish labor parties in Palestine, the Achduth Ha’avodah and the Ha’poel Hazair, together secured 84 seats in the assembly. The Zionist Revisionists hold 15 seats.
