One hundred and fifty thousand dollars were allotted for Jewish credit institutions (Kassas) in Poland, by the Joint Reconstruction Foundation, consisting of representatives of the Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Colonization Association. The decision to allot this sum was taken at a meeting of the Foundation.
The Joint Reconstruction Foundation was established several years ago when the liquidation of the former activities of the J.D.C. was planned.
The Foundation also allotted a loan of $50,000 to the Jewish Central Bank in Lithuanian, which was established by the Joint Distribution Committee. Appropriations for credits in other European countries were also made.
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is represented on the Board of the Foundation by Bernard Flexner, Meyer Gillis, Herbert H. Lehman, Leonard George Robinson, Felix M. Warburg and Peter Wiernik.

Joseph Lewinsky, cantor and composer of synagogal music, now residing in Manchester. England, explained his retusal to have phonographic records made of his voice by stating that it was contrary to Jewish tradition.
“I do not think our sacred melodies should be interpreted on the phonograph,” he said.
The sixtieth birthday of Joshua Hankin, who, for the last forty years has been engaged in purchasing land for Palestine Jewish enterprises, was celebrated in Nahalal in the Valley of Jezreel.
A great part of the land owned by the Palestine Land Development Company was acquired with the assistance of Mr. Hankin. He was honored on his sixtieth birthday by his associates in the Palestine Land Development Company, who tendered him a luncheon.
Dr. Arthur Ruppin, as toastmaster, mentioned difficult times in his work with Mr. Hankin, such as the purchase of Merhaviah, Nahalal, Nuris. Dr. Thon and Mr. S. Kaplansky, on behalf of the Palestine Zionist Executive and the Jewish National Fund, were the speakers.
Morris A. Rapken, prominent figure in Jewish activities of San Francisco, Cal., one of the leaders of the Orthodox group, died at the age of 71. He was the founder of the Shelter, a Jewish charitable institution, and was a duector in many local Jewish organizations. He also took an active pan in civic and political aftairs.
JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES
Six hundred members of the Real Estate Club of the New York Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies honored Mr. G. Richard Davis, president of the Club, at a dinner. Mr. S. W. Straus was toastinaster.
In honor of Mr. Davis, Mr. A. Brieken announced an increase of his 1926 subscription from $10,000 to $25,000 for the year 1926. Jonah J. Goldstein, Henry Samstag. Congressman Ansorge, Benjamin Winter. Benjamin Benenson and Frederick Brow were among the speakers. A silver platter inscribed to Mr. Davis was presented to him.
Dr. S. C. Kohs, secretary of the Jewish Federation of Charities of Oakland, Cal. has been appointed superintendent of the Eureka Benevolent Society of San Francisco. Dr. Kohs is a graducate of the University of the City of New York and holds a degree in philosophy from Stanford University.
