The freedom of the city of Chicago was presented to Colonel Josiah Wedgwood, by Mayor William E. Dever. Col. Wedgwood is in Chicago addressing a series of meetings under the auspices of the United Palestine Appeal. Mayor Dever put an automobile at the disposal of Colonel and Mrs. Wedgwood and provided a police escort for them.
Colonel Wedgwood spoke at a luncheon at the City Club at which leading Jewish and non-Jewish citizens were present, including Judge Harry M. Fisher and Judge Hugo Pam who presided. Col. Wedgwood said he expressed the opinion prevailing among English members of Parliament that Palestine is a success. “The Jews have proved able agriculturists: the immigrants from Eastern Europe are a blessing to Palestine. The British policy regarding the Balfour Declaration is farsighted and humane.” he stated.
Lessing Rosenthal, prominent Chicago lawyer. stated that he was in Palestine recently and whole-heartedly endorses Col. Wedgwood’s views.
Chicago Jewry is organizing for the half million dollar campaign of the United Palestine Appeal.
The American Jewish Pharmacists’ Committee, New York City, will raise $50,000 among the Jewish pharmacists of New York with which to establish the Pharmaceutical Department of the Medical College of the Hebrew University in Palestine, it was announced.
The committee in charge of the pharmacists campaign includes J. L. Lascoff, Chairman; Abraham Bakst, Treasurer; and Abraham Margulis, Secretary.
