Dr. Leon Reich, who came here to lecture on the subject of America, Poland, Palestine, when interviewed today by the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency defined his position in the political crisis within the Club of Jewish Deputies.
“I have been withholding my resignation in order to save the unity of the Club, which, as was claimed, was endangered. I know that the majority of the Club will, logically, follow the lines of the Polish Jewish agreement which corresponds with the wishes of the majority of the Jewish population in Poland. It is my opinion that in view of the attitude of the Skrzynski government up to the present, a sudden opposition to that government would be unjustified. During the last few weeks the government considered several matters which are of great importance to the Jewish population, such as relief from the compulsory Sunday rest law and the granting of facilities to Jewish artisans. A sudden opposition would, therefore, be considered a spite policy.
“Count Skrzynski is earnestly desirous of carrying out the Polish Jewish agreement, but the process must be slow, because of the Anti-Semitic movement, Grabski and the conservatives. There are, simultaneously, internal political difficulties which take up the government’s time.
“I myself would lead the opposition against the Skrzynski government if it would, by a practice of the numerus clausus or by the non-fulfillment of the above-mentioned demands, provoke the Jewish population.
JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES
Funds raised in the joint drive in Tampa, Fla, for the United Palestine Appeal and the United Jewish Campaign will be apportioned at the rate of three to one, according to a decision of the Executive Committee.
It was previously decided that one-third of the funds raised was to go to the United Palestine Appeal. Mr. Abraham Maas is chairman of the Tampa committee.
Fifteen thousand dollars were raised at a banquet at the Tutwiler Hotel, Birmingham, Ala., at which the drive at the United Palestine Appeal was launched.
Construction on the new synagogue of the Agudas Achier Congregation, Dallas, Texas, will begin shortly. The estimated cost of the building is $45,000. M. Katz is president of the congregation.
Because a deficit of $10,000 was incurred during 1925 the Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Ky., may be closed.
