London “times” Boycotts Zangwill’s Play, is Charge

The charge that the London “Times” boycotted Israel Zangwill’s latest play, “The Foreing House,” was made by Jose G. Levy, the manager of the Liule Theatre.

In a letter to the “Westminster Gazette,” Mr. Levy stated:

“As the manager of the Liule Theatre at which I am proud to have produced Mr. Zangwill’s latest play. ‘The Forcing House,’ I was pleased to read your protest against the boycott by the ‘Times.’ I have hitherro always been treated with the unmost courtesy by the ‘Times,’ and I am, therefore, more astonished that I should be thus penalized, for, of course, the boycott hurts me, and perhaps still more, my distinguished company of artists, no less than it hurts the playwright.

“This, as you suggesr, is a matter of public ethics, and I share your wish that more light should be thrown on it.”
