Hias Supports Perlman-wadsworth Bills, in Appeal to House Immigration Committee

The Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society, Hias, has filed with the House Immigration Committee a petition in support of the Perlman-Wadsworth bills for the exemption of certain relatives of citizens and declarants.

The petition states that nearly every inquiry directed to the Hias regarding the admission of relatives involves a separated family, and points out that aliens who were admitted prior to the present quota law had reasonable ground to believe that upon becoming citizens or declarants they could expect to have united with them in this country their wives, parents and children, under the law in force at that time, but that these aliens now find themselves divested of the privilege which formerly existed of bringing these relatives into America.

The petition also pointed out that the admission of the additional immigrants will not affect the economic condition of the country as the heads of families already here will provide for their support.

Referring to the preference given under the present law to children between 18 and 21, parents and husbands of American citizens only, the petition states this preference is “meaningless and a mockery under the very limited quotas of some countries,” and adding that exemption alone, as proposed by the pending bills, will extend the necessary relief.
