A defense of the attitude of the Roumanian anti-Semitic students in demanding the numerus clausus against Jewish students was made by Patriarch Miron Christea, head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Roumania, in an address he delivered here yesterday.
The Patriarch protested against what he termed “the deforestation of Bukowina and Transylvania by foreigners.”
“When our students demand a numerus clausus, complaints are raised abroad that we persecute the minorities. The fact is that in several places we are unable to have Roumanian officials and there is now a numerus clausus against Roumanians. I, as the spiritual father of the fourteen million Roumanians, demand that justice be restored and that all our contracts with aliens be revised.”
