United States Recognition of Lithuania Subject of Libel Against Jewish Deputies

The recognition of the Lithuanian Republic by the United States of America was made a political issue in the hands of anti-Semitic leaders against the Jews of Lithuania.

The issue was taken out of the hands of the anti-Semitic leaders by a decision of the court, sentencing Priest Schmulkschtis, leader of the Christian National Party and editor of the “Offizial Organsritas,” to five days in jail for libelling the Jewish deputies in the Lithuanian Sejm.

Despite the fact that Congressman Sabath of Chicago introduced into the House the bill concerning the recognition of Lithuania by the United States, Priest Schmulkschtis, in articles in his paper, charged that the Club of Jewish Deputies in the Lithuanian parliament, when the question of recognition was being discussed, urged the Union of American Rabbis to protest against the de jure recognition of Lithuania by the United States.
