Four thousand people gathered in the Arena Gardens here at a mass meeting and reception in honor of Chaim Nachman Bialik, Dr. Schmarya Levin and Dr. Stephen S. Wise.
At a banquet at the Statler Hotel, Mayor John Smith greeted the guests of honor. Ossip Gabrilowitch, conductor of the Detroit Symphony and son-in-law of Mark Twain, declared himself a Zionist and subscribed $300 for the United Palestine Appeal.
The raising of half of Detroit’s quota of $125,000 for the United Palestine Appeal was announced at the mass meeting and a check for $25,000 on account was handed to Dr. Wise.
Morris Friedberg was toastmaster at the banquet and Rabbi Herchman, chairman of the mass meeting.
