Dr. Ismar Freund, member of the Council of the Prussian Federation of Jewish Communities and lecturer at the Seminary for Jewish Science, is celebrating his fiftieth birthday today.
Born on April 11th, 1878, in Breslau, Dr. Freund studied at the Breslau University and the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary. He became lecturer at the Berlin Seminary in 1905. In 1908 he published his work, “The Legal Position of the German Jews in the Position of the German Jews in the Prussian School System.” This was followed the same year by his “History and Emancipation of the Jews in Prussia” in two volumes, and in 1911 he published his “State, Church and Judaism in Prussia.” All these works are intended as sources for a big work on which Dr. Freund is engaged. “The History and a Systematic Statement on the State and Church Rights of the Jews in Germany,” projected as a complete statement on the legal position of the Jews in all the German States.
Dr. Freund took a leading part in the organization of the Federation of German Jews. He is the author of the constitution of the Federation and of the constitution of the Federation of Prussian Jewish Communities. He has for many years been on the Executive of the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith. His work, “Jew Hatred,” published by this organization has appeared in many editions.
