Surprising results of an investigation into the practicability of the Collectives, the semi-communistic form of farming, were disclosed by “Der Stern,” Yiddish Communist paper of Charkoff.
The paper reports that much comment has been aroused in Russian circles over the recent collapse of the agricultural collectives. Some regarded this failure of the collectives as due to specifically Jewish characteristics, declaring that the Jewish town, trading elements are not fitted for life in farming collectives.
The paper, therefore, undertook an investigation of the conditions in the general collectives in the Ukraine. The investigation showed that the productivity of all the collectives in the Ukraine is lower than in the farms operated by individuals. In actuality the collectives represent not one big farm, but a series of small farms. These collectives conduct their accounts badly and are not punctual in the payment of credits, the investigation showed.
The collapse of the Jewish collectives is really due to the general characteristics of the collectives, “Der Stern” declares.
