The appointment of a Jew to the post of Minister of Finance in the Polish Cabinet, which is now in the process of formation, following the resignation of the coalition government headed by Count Alexander Skrzynski, is a strong probability, according to a report of the local Yiddish paper, “Der Hajnt.”
The newspaper reports that Wincenty Witos, leader of the powerful Polish peasant party, Piast, and former prime minister, in discussing the formation of the new cabinet, expressed the opinion to his political friends that the only solution of the financial crisis in Poland seems to rest in the appointment of a Jewish financier to the post of Finance Minister.
When told by his political friends that prior to the acceptance of such a post, the Jewish leaders would “ask their own conditions,” Witos is reported to have replied. “Very well, It is necessary to satisfy the demands of the Jewish population. Besides, the demands of the Jewish population are indeed modest. It is necessary to abolish the Numerus Clausus. Let the Jews go to the universities. My peasants find it unnecessary.”
The resignation of the coalition government followed a disagreement between the representatives of the national democratic party and the Left members of the cabinet, regarding the budget question.
