Nearly $2,000,000 Cash in United Palestine Appeal Throughout United States

A quota of $1,000,000 cash as the goal of an intensive collection campaign to be carried on throughout the country during May, was adopted at a conference of regional directors of the United Palestine Appeal held at the Hotel Pennsylvania. Emanuel Neumann, National Director of the Appeal, presided at the conference. Speakers emphasized that the success of the United Palestine Appeal this year was the beginning of greater efforts for Palestine on the part of American Jewry in succeeding years.

With $503,249 cash received during April, making the total cash collections for the United Palestine Appeal almost $2,000,000 thus far, the directors agreed to raise $1,000,000 cash during May to meet the present situation in Palestine and provide the funds necessary to carry out the budget so that immigration and colonization work should not be curtailed.

Mr. Neumann in his report on the national campaign, pointed out the success of the present effort. He mentioned New York City which raised $733,000 last year and $1,450,000 this year with $700,000 cash already turned in; Florida with $6,000 last year and $96,000 this year; Chicago which has already sent in $100,000 cash with another $100,000 cash promised by June 1st; Pittsburgh with $26,000 last year and $78,000 already raised this year; St. Louis which has raised $60,000 this year as against $18,000 last year and with $37,500 cash already remitted; and the Chicago Region which last year raised $100,000 and which guarantees $500,000 this year.

Reports submitted by the Regional Directors showed the following results in their territories:

New England–$105,975.90 last year, $241,657.06 this year, including $149,755.47 in cash with $200,000 cash promised by convention time; Connecticut and Rhode Island–$93,556.85 last year. $136,550 this year, including over $80,000 cash with $125,000 cash promised by the convention; New Jersey–$106,846.35 last year. $75,000 this year including $38,609 in cash (These figures do not include Newark from which $100,000 is expected); New York State–$49,859.50 last year, $149,000 this year, including $72,000 cash; Eastern Pennsylvania–$249,079.31 last year, $82,000 so far this year (Several important campaigns are yet to be held, including Philadelphia’s $375,000 effort, just opened in which $130,000 has already been raised.)

Seaboard–$123,656.88 last year, $130,000 thus far this year, including $74,034.55 in cash, with several important campaigns yet to be completed; Detroit–$35,158.88 last year, $105,000 thus far this year, including $50,000 cash and with $100,000 cash promised; Ohio and Kentucky–$68,722 last year, $200,000 this year, including $101,000 in cash; Pacific Coast–$62,699 last year, $125,000 this year, including $40,000 cash and with the big Los Angeles campaign just started; Texas–$29,494 last year, $75,000 this year, including $35,000 cash.

The Masonic Club of Bay Ridge presented an American flag to the Congregation Sh’erith Israel of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, as a token of friendship. Mr. Harry Caul, ex-president of the Masonic Club, made the presentation and Rabbi S. Leon Hurwitz, rabbi of the Congregation, gave the acceptance speech.

One-third of the $375,000 Philadelphia quota of the United Palestine Appeal was raised in the first day of the drive.

The amount reported by the 140 team captains was $126,000.
