Cleveland Honors Bialik, Famous Hebrew Poet. at Public Function

Chaim Nachmann Bialik was honored by the City of Cleveland today. A Hebrew poet corner was set aside near the Shakespeare Gardens where Bialik planted three Cedars of Lebanon.

The City Manager, William Hopkins, uncovered a tablet in the Park in honor of Bialik, commemorating his visit to Cleveland. Prof. A. Hatton, representing Western Reserve University, the poet Edmund Vance Cook and Rabbi Solomon Goldman welcomed the Hebrew poet in the presence of a large audience of Jews and non-Jews.

Bialik delivered an address in Hebrew which was translated by Rabbi Goldman. Bialik declared that the genius of Shakespeare represents the Anglo-Saxon race’s contribution to the world; the Bible is the Jewish contribution to the world.

Bialik was tendered a luncheon at the Hotel Hollenden. Dr. Schmarya Levin and Bialik spoke of the achievements in Palestine.

A mass meeting in the evening at the Masonic Temple was attended by three thousand people. Besides the guest of honor and Dr. Levin, the speakers were Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver. Rabbi Barnet Brickner, Rabbi A. H. Friedlander and the Chairman, Rabbi Solomon Goldman.

The Joint Drive of the United Palestine Appeal and the United Jewish Campaign in Erie, Pa., was concluded at the $100 dinner at the home of Chairman Samuel D. Ostrow. $1,000 in excess of the $15,000 quota was raised. Hall of the $16,000 raised will go to the United Palestine Appeal.

Among the workers in the drive were Rabbis Currick and Goldberger, Milton and Morris Schaffner. Henry Sachs, Abe Daneman, Leo Well. Henry Solomoa, Phillip Hanauer, A. B. Cutts and Mrs. Louis Leri. President of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Campaign.
