The first membership charter to a European Sports Club in the Sportsmanship Brotherhood, an American organization founded as a “bridge of understanding between the nations of the world” will be granted to the Hakoah Sport Club of Vienna, according to a decision of the Board of Directors of the Brotherhood. This was made known yesterday in a letter from Mr. Paul Neumann, vice-chairman of the Foreign Contracts Committee of the Sportsmanship Brotherhood and Sports Editor of the “New York Evening Post,” addressed to Mr. Abraham Tuvim, secretary of the Hakoah delegation to the United States.
“In view of the splendid spirit of sportsmanship shown by the Hakoah Football team on its tour, and in view also of the fine missionary work done in bringing the United States closer to continental Europe than all the diplomacy of the past eight years. I am authorized by Matthew Woll. president, and the Board of Directors of the Sportsmanship Brotherhood to present to the Hakoah Club a charter of membership as the first European Chapter of the organization.
“At the same time I am authorized to present to the individual players of the Hakoah football team our ‘sportsmanship’ emblem, awarded only to men and boys who have proved themselves sportsmen in every sense of the term,” Mr. Neumann’s letter read.
The presentation will be made by Mr. Neumann at the testimonial dinner being tendered to the Hakoah team on June 1, before their departure from the United States.
The Sportsmanship Brotherhood is a non-partisan, non-political, non-national and non-religious body of men organized to form a bridge of understanding between the nations of the world, according to the platform of the organization. It was created to foster the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the world. The organizers hold that the spirit of sportsmanship and athletic competition will establish a closer link between the nations than has been accomplished through diplomacy.
The organization now numbers among its membership in the United States, 1,000 schools, 15 athletic organizations and has a membership of 2,000,000. On the Board of Directors are representatives of the Amateur Athletic Union, the American Polo Association, the National Amateur Athletic Federation, the Public Playgrounds Association, the Russell Sage Foundation, the New York State High Schools Athletic Association.
Mr. Matthew Woll, vice-president of the American Federation of Labor, is president of the Sportsmanship Brotherhood, James G. Blaine, vice-president of the New York Trust Company, is treasurer of the Brotherhood. Mr. John P. Bowditch of Massachusetts is vice-president.
The gift of Alfred N. Heinsheimer of his summer home at Breezy Point. Far Rockaway, to the hospital for Joint Diseases was dedicated Sunday. The gift includes the forty room house and fourteen acres ground. valued at $1,000,000. and an endowment fund of $500,000.
The home has been equipped with 120 beds, an operating room and wheel chairs to be used on a sea wall Mr. Heinsheimer built for the patients.
