With $285,000 in pledges, this city’s joint drive for $600,000 in behalf of the United Jewish Campaign, the United Palestine Appeal and the local Conference of Jewish Charities, was formally opened at a dinner in the Y. M. H. A. Y. W. H. A. Building, Thursday night. The actual canvassing for subscriptions among local Jewry will start Monday and will continue until June 2.
The largest donors at the dinner were Louis Bamberger and Felix Fuld, promnent merchants and philan-thropists, each of whom pledged $30,000 or jointly 10 per cent of the entire amount sought.
The principal speakers at the dinner were Dr. Stephen S. Wise, chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, and Dr. Henry Moskowitz, prominent civic and social worker of New York. Both urged unanimous support on the part of local Jewry in the drive. Dr. Moskowitz reiated personal experiences while on an observation trip through eastern and central Europe last summer. Other speakers were Mr. Fuld, who is the State Chairman of the United Jewish Campaign; A. J. Dimond, chairman of the Initial Gifts Committee of the joint drive, and president of the Conference of Jewish Charities; and Morris Scheck, chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, as the local joint campaign is known.
Women workers in the local drive met at the Progressive Club Friday noon and heard addresses by Mrs. Rebekah Kohut and Irma Lindheim, both of New York.
Among the charitable bequests of the late Simeon Simon of Alexandria, Louisiana, who died in December, was one of $5000 to the Jewish Agricultural Society.
