The French Press devotes much space to the assassination of Petlura by Sholom Schwartzbard.
The “Petit Journal” publishes an interview with the Soviet Embassy here who told its representative that the time when Petlura was in power was also a period of terrible pogroms against the Jews.
The “Trezub.” the Ukrainian paper here which Petlura edited, states that it is not true that Petlura was responsible for the pogroms. If there were ever anti-Semitic reports in the papers, it says, they were directed only against Jewish Bolsheviks and not against Jews as such.
Millerand’s organ “L’Avenir” writes that the murder is a mysterious one and will be difficult to unravel. The question, it says, is whether the guilty man will be punished. We know the juries of the Seine Tribunal, the paper states. “L’Humanite” condemns the murder as an act of individual terror bat, it continues, it shows how strong is the thirst for vengeance among those who suffered from the acts of the terrorists of the Russian counter-revolution.
The press in general expresses itself in sympatheric terms regarding Schwartzbard, speaking of him as a brave man who fought with distinction under the French flag during the war.
The Yiddish daily here the “Hajnt” writes: “Only a naive. nervous young man could have imagined that a revolver shot could wipe out the rivers of blood which flowed in the Ukraine. would take vengeance for the lives of the hundreds of thousands of Jews who were torrured to death. If we Jews were to take vengeance on all those who in streams, such assassinations would be daily occurrences.
“Our vengeance is a higher kind. An example was recently given us by Sholem Ash who said us of a Jew, the only one left of a whole town wiped cut in the Ukruine, going about with a little girl the child of the Atta?an who had ### and taking care of her. That is an example of Jewish vengeance.”
