Plans which may partly relieve the unemployment situation among the Jewish population in Lodz, the Polish textile center, were decided upon.
A commission to find ways and means of setting into motion a part of the small weavers industry, in which mainly Jews are employed, was appointed by the weavers in an attempt to combat the increasing unemployment and resulting starvation.
Prior to the economic crisis in Poland there were in addition to the large textile plants, a great number of Jewish weavers who owned one or two “weaver’s chairs.” These small producers were compelled to stop their industry because of the lack of operating capital and a market for their products.
The plan devised now aims at turning over the products of these small weavers to Jewish cooperative societies. Hundreds of weavers would find employment if this plan proves successful. The amount of $10,000 was promised by the representative of the Joint Distribution Committee in Poland to aid in the carrying out of this plan.
The conference of Zionists of the State of Maine, attended by delegates representing all the important Jewish communities of the state was held on Sunday and Monday in Old Orchard, Me. Max L. Pinanski, president of the state organization, reported $20,000 raised for the United Palestine Appeal during the year.
Resolutions were adopted by the conference congratulating Louis Lipsky on his election as President of the Zionist Organization of America, endorsing the work of the American Jewish Congress, and protesting against the Russian colonization plan, but welcoming the relief work of the Joint Distribution Committee. The conference was addressed by the Hon. Elihu D. Stone of Boston, Bernard Stone of New York, Robert Silverman, Joseph S. Shubow of Boston. Governor Brewster of Maine greeted the conference.
The officers elected were: Rabbi Phineas Israeli, Honorary President; Rev. Meyer J. Levenson, Honorary Vice-President; Max L. Pinanski, President; Meyer Minsky, Bangor and Joseph Wigon, Portland, Mrs. H. H. Adelman, Bangor, Vice-Presidents; Rose Levenson, Portland, Secretary; L. Shiro, Waterville, Treasurer. Eldon Markson was again unanimously chosen Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal of Main.
