The rumor that the Ku Klux Klan will make an effort to prove that Mayor Kendrick has either Jewish or Negro blood in his veins has been spread here in connection with the campaign of the Klan and other organizations against the mayor because of his recent decision to bar the Klan demonstration from the Sesquicentennial Exposition and to have the exposition open on Sunday.
Another development connected with this campaign is the disclosure by Mayor Kendrick on Saturday that he and Mrs. Kendrick have received threatening letters because of the open Sunday ruling.
Mayor Kendrick said, apropos the threatening letters: “These letters are obviously not written by ministers, but rather by ignorant persons. They are badly worded and misspelled, and many of them appear to have been written by the same person, although different names are affixed.”
Bishop Joseph F. Berry, on behalf of 20,000,000 members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, announced that a boycott has been instituted against the Exposition, because it is opened on Sundays. The Bishop declared that he has sent a letter to 20,000 Methodist ministers, apprising them of the boycott, and urging their congregations to “silently remain away from the Exposition.”
