The conference of representatives of center Zionist groups, called at the initiative of the Zionist Organization of America, opened here yesterday.
The purpose of the conference is to consolidate the groups of the so-called general Zionists and is an attempt to provide the Zionist Executive with a strong center backing which would act as a counter balance to the contending right and left wings in the Zionist Congress. Representatives of the Zionist Organization of America, including Louis Lipsky, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Meyer W. Weisgal, and Maurice Samuel, are attending the conference.
The meeting of the Zionist Actions Committee will open here on Thursday. The Board of Governors of the Hebrew University is expected to meet here on August 1. Professor Albert Einstein will be present at the meeting.
KLAN BLOCKED QUOTA LAW CHANGES, SAYS CONGRESSMAN
The charge that the Klan blocked immigration relief measures was made by Representative F. H. LaGuardia in an address Monday night before about 1000 of his constituents of the Twentieth Congressional District.
Mr. LaGuardia charged that Congress broke promises made to change the immigration quota law and instead took orders from the Ku Klux Klan. He pointed out that President Coolidge requested in his message that changes in this law be made if necessary and that the request was ignored.
“The policy of keeping out of this country the fathers and mothers of families already established here never has been the policy of the American people,” he said. “It is the brutal will of a small minority which is narrow-minded and bigoted, with hatred in their hearts.”
