Palestine and Syria to Be Connected by Telephone

Palestine and Syria will have telephone communication shortly, it was announced here today.

Telephone connections will be established between Metullah, the northern most point of Jewish settlement in Palestine, and the nearest Lebanese point.

JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES

The Business Men’s Council of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Montreal made its annual tour of inspection of the summer activities and of the Mount Sinai Sanatorium located in the Laurentian Mountains. Mr. Louis Salomon, President of the Sanatorium. was presented with a loving cup by Mr. Michael Hirsch.

The Schmidt Memorial Building of the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Md. formerly the Hebrew Hospital and Asylum Association, will be ready for occupancy late in September. This, together with the original buildings, will give the hospital 275 beds.

The new structure is equipped with the most modern operating rooms and facilities for attending physicians and surgeons and for nurses. The present buildings, including the Schmidt Building are valued at approximately $2,000,000.

Ground was broken on Wednesday for the new $3,000,000 Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, N. J. to supplant the present structure.

Frank L. Liveright, president of the hospital board, turned the first spadeful of earth, and prayers were offered by Rabbi Julius Silberfeld. The hospital, when completed, will consist of a group of fourteen buildings, the largest to be ten stories high.

The new synagogue of the Tifereth Israel Congregation in Forest Park. Md., was dedicated. Rabbis A. N. Schwartz, Joseph Marcus and Mordecai Rabinowitz spoke at the dedication exercises. A holy scroll, presented to the congregation by Mr. and Mrs. David Marks, also was dedicated.

Plans for the new Community Center of the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association of Jersey City, N. J. are being prepared by Frank E. Hahn and S. Brian Baylinson.

The new building is to be four stories in height with basement. The exterior of the building will be in Italian Rennaisance style with the use of Aquia Freestone and a rough textured light shade brick.

The interior of the building will have offices, lounges, an auditorium, swimming pool, gymnasium, handball courts, boxing and wrestling rooms, club rooms, and class rooms.

It is estimated that the cost of the building will be $400,000.

The Building Committee consists of I. Gershonowitz, P. Gershonowitz, Harry Goldowsky, Harry Max, Jacob Gold. Robert Broadman, Treasurer and Sidney Marcus, Secretary.

The Middletown. N. Y. Synagogue and Jewish Community Center was dedicated with impressive ceremonies. Congressman Hamilton Fish. Jr., and Dr. Mordecai Soltes were the principal speakers.

The edifice is of red tapestry brick and white fluted soapstone trim, four stories high. It includes a gymnasium, auditorium, showers, locker rooms for men and women on the first floor. Provision has been made for meeting rooms, the executive offices, women’s social room, and a library on the main floor. The upper floor will comprise the temple.

The appointment of Samuel J. Rodman of Canada as supervisor of Young Judaea activities in Greater New York was announced by Samuel J. Borowsky, Executive Chairman of National Young Judaea.
