An urgent warning to divert the wave of emigration of Poles and Jews which is now directed to Argentine, was issued here by Mr. Mazurkiewicz, Polish Minister at Buenos Aires, who has arrived here.
Under the present conditions, Polish emigrants should not under any circumstances proceed to Argentine. At present about 900 Polish emigrants, half of whom are Jews, are arriving in the country monthly. The Poles, who are mainly peasants, find it impossible to obtain work and experience hardships which were unknown to them in Poland. The Jews, are mainly artisans and their position is equally bad. Argentine has few factories and unemployment is very great. In Buenos Aires alone there are now 100,000 unemployed.
The Minister expressed his conviction that the shipping companies are misleading the Polish emigrants. He also blamed the newspapers for spreading the impression that Argentine is a country of good opportunities. The fact of the matter is, he stated, that hundreds of the emigrants are starving.
