British Zionist Debating Team Will Arrive in New York on Friday

The debating team, representing the University Zionist Federation of the British Empire, which is to meet the teams representing six of the leading chapters of the Avukah, the national Student Zionist Organization, will be officially received by Mayor Walker upon its arrival here next Friday.

The British team consists of two men and one woman; Dr. David Perk, graduate of Johannesburg and Leeds University, medical officer of the Gloucester Hospital; Arthur Lourie, B.A., L.L.B. graduate of Cambridge and Harvard, and Miss B. Gudansky, M.A graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, a debater and orator of wide reputation.

Two debates are scheduled in New York for the team, one at Columbia University, at which Maurice Samuel will be chairman and at the Brooklyn Jewish Center, at which James Waterman Wise will preside.

The New York team which is to meet the British team at Columbia University will consist of Lionel Golub, LL.M. Clark and New York Universities; Leo Guzik, LL.B., New York and Fordham Universities, and Beryl Levy, Columbia Varsity Debating team and winner of several oratorical and debating medals.

The first American-British debate is scheduled for Boston on Tuesday, April 5th, with Professor Nathan Isaacs, as chairman, the Boston Avukah to be represented by Joseph Shubow, A.M. of Harvard, Literary Editor, “Jewish Advocate”, and vice president of the national Avukah organization; Leo Schwartz, A.B. Harvard, member of the Avukah National Executive Committee, and M. Michaclson, Harvard.

Following the Boston debate, the British orators will meet Canadian contestants at Toronto, on Thursday, April 7th at Talmud Torah Hall. Toronto’s laurels will be defended by Lionel Gelber, Louis Razminsky and Harry Green, all of the University of Toronto. On Sunday, April 10th, the British team will debate in Chicago at Sinai Temple, where they will meet William Halperin, B.A., Harry Ruskin, B.A., Meyer Handler, B.A., all of the University of Chicago, and Aubrey Mallach, Chicago Hebrew Theological College, as alternate.

In Milwaukee, a debate is scheduled for April 11th at Temple Emanuel Community Hall, with Phineas Smoller, B.A., Johns Hopkins and Hebrew Union College; Avin Sable, Marquette University, and Harry Gilmore Slater, Marquette, representing the Wisconsin city. Dr. Eugene Heifetz, Marquette University, will be alternate.

Following their western dates, the English team will debate in Philadelphia, at the Academy of Music auditorium, the local team consisting of Isidore Katz, Instructor of Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania; Abraham Orlow, B.S., LL.B., Instructor in Political Science, Wharton School of Commerce and Rabbi Simon Greenberg, B.A., Columbia University. Rabbi Har Zion Synagogue. Leon Meltzer, B.A., LL.B., will be alternate.

The subject to be debated by all the chapters except New York is: “Is It Sound Policy to Present Zionism as the Solution of the Jewish Problem.” The subject to be debated in New York is: “Resolved, that the Jewish Homeland be modelled in principle, after the Mosaic Commonwealth.”
