Free Synagogue Will Celebrate Its 20th Anniversary on April 10th

The Free Synagogue, founded in April, 1907 by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, will celebrate its twentieth anniversary with a dinner on Sunday, April 10, at the Hotel Commodore.

The Free Synagogue was the first institution of its kind in the country, which abolished dues and pews.

The first president of the Synagogue was Henry Morgenthau. The president today is Abram I. Elkus.

Gov. Alfred E. Smith is expected to address the gathering. Addresses will also be delivered by Judge Julian W. Mack, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Institute of Religion; Solomon M. Stroock, president of the New York Federation of Jewish Philanthropic Societies; the Rev. John Haynes Holmes, of the Community Church of New York; Rabbi Nathan Krass, Dr. Hugo Gressman of the University of Berlin; and Sir Wyndham Deedes, former Civil Secretary for Palestine.

SOCIAL WORKERS CONFERENCE WILL MEET IN DES MOINES

The National Conference of Jewish Social Service will hold its annual sessions at Des Moines, Iowa, May 8-11, according to an announcement from the national offices in New York City, by Samuel A. Goldsmith, Secretary of the organization.

Representatives from 220 social service organizations in 95 cities in 38 states and 4 organizations in Canada are expected to attend.

A review of the year’s work will be presented by William J. Shroder, President of the Conference, in his annual report at the opening session, Sunday night, May 8th.

Among the subjects to be discussed are: “Field of Sectarian Social Work”, by Mrs. John M. Glenn, American Association for Organization Family Work, N. Y.; “Character of Relationships of Jewish Agencies with Public or Non-Sectarian Agencies in the Field of Family Welfare”, by Harry L. Lurie, Superintendent, Jewish Social Service Bureau, Chicago, III.

“What Forces in the Jewish Community Govern the Number of Jewish Dependent Children Admitted to Placement?” will be the subject of a paper by Zena Blanc, Executive Secretary, Bureau for Jewish Children, Philadelphia.

Raymond Clapp, Director, Welfare Federation of Cleveland, will read a paper on “What Have Been the Effects in Jewish Social Agencies of Membership in Community Chests and Councils of Social Agencies?”

“Extra Curricular Training of Jewish Social Workers” will be the theme of a paper by Maurice J. Karpf, Director, Training School for Jewish Social Work, New York.

Solomon J. Cutler, Director of the Budget Department of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies of New York City will present a paper on “Preparation of Budgets for Federations.”
