Norfolk, Va., raised $5,000, over one-fourth of its quota for the United Palestine Appeal. at a banquet Sunday night. Maurice Samuel was the principal speaker. Rabbi Alex Steinbaugh was Toastmaster. H. Crockin is Campaign Chairman and Mrs. Herman Barr, Chairman of the Women’s Divistion.
Although the United Palestine Appeal campaign in Newark, N. J., will not open formally until June 7, a pre-campaign dinner held there netted approximately $20,000 or one-fifth of the quota of $100,000 which the city is to raise. Bernard Miller, chairman of the drive, wast host at the dinner and Judge William M. Lewis, national chairman of the Appeal, the principal speaker. Other speakers included Philip J. Schotland, vice-chairman of the drive; Michael A. Stavitsky and Meyer S. Mintz, campaign director.
The largest contributors were Mr. and Mrs. Felix Fuld, who subscribed $5,000. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hollander subscribed $3,000, and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Miller, $1,000; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hollander. $1,000; and Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Hollander, $1,000. Other donations varied from $750 down to $30.
Ground breaking ceremonies for the new building of the Jacksonville Jewish Center, Jacksonville, Fla., will take place Sunday, June 5.
Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan of New York is expected to take part in the exercises.
Harry Finkelstein is president of the Jewish Center organization.
The first unit of the Jacksonville Jewish Center is expected to be compieted and fully equipped for religious, cultural and educational activities by October 1, 1927. A second unit will be erected later to house the athletic and physical development activities.
Newport News, Va., oversubscribed its quota of $2,000 at the banquet Jaunching the local United Palestine Appeal drive on May 1, at which Rabbi Louis J. Schwefel of Washington was the principal speaker. Mr. Theo. Beskin is Chairman of the Newport News Campaign. Mr. Charles Reiser, Treasurer and Miss S. Schneider, Secretary.
Roanoke, Va., launched its campaign on May 2. The quota is $3,500 for that city. Mr. N. W. Schlossberg is Chairman of the Campaign.
Norfolk, Va., inaugurated its campaign on Sunday, May 22, with a banquet at the Ghent Club, at which Maurice Samuel was the principal speaker. Over $5,000, one-fourth of the Norfolk quota was raised at the banquet. Dr. Alex Alan Steinbach was toastmaster, H. Crockin, Chairman of the Campaign Committee and Dr. J. A. Lipnick, Chairman of the Executive Committee.
The Los Angeles United Jewish Appeal for the United Jewish Campaign, the United Palestine Appeal and twelve other Jewish funds, including the Wider Scope Fund of the Independent Order B’nai Brith, will be launched at a banquet on June 13. Henry W. Louis, prominent Los Angeles merchant and civic worker, is chairman of the campaign.
A quota of $225,000 will be songht.
The Congregation Kesser Maariv, Chicago, has purchased a site on the north side of Chicago upon which the construction of a $150,000 temple will be started soon. The building will have an auditorium seating 1,500 and a school.
