Charges against the Palestine police for reprisals against labor on May Day were formulated in the House of Commons yesterday by the Communist member of the House, S. Saklatvala.
Replying to a question raised by Mr. Saklatvala, who charged that a number of Palestine workers were arrested, wounded and imprisoned, Col. Amery stated that the police took action to prevent illegal demonstrations which would have been embarrassing to the government. The result was that no demonstration was held in Haifa and only minor incidents occurred in Jerusalem. The charge concerning Tel Aviv, where 12 were said to have been injured and a number arrested, is unknown to him, the secretary stated.
Mr. Saktatvala then asked why a proceeding which is legitimate in Britain is not permissable in Palestine. The Colonial Secretary replied that conditions in Palestine are different.
Saklatvala further asked what charge was brought against Arie Kart, who was sentenced to 50 days imprisonment and recommended for deportation. Amery replied that Kart was tried for participation in an illegal assembly, interfering with the police and for membership in an illegal organization.
