“For the first time in many months the Joint Foreign Committee is able to report a peaceful situation in Roumania,” Lucien Wolf, secretary of the Committee, reported at the last meeting of the Board of Jewish Deputies.
“There is a new Government in Roumania,” he said, “and this Government contains statesmen,” Mr. Wolf said he hoped there would be an improvement in the position of the Jews. He asked the Board to express sympathy with the Roumanian Royal Family in their bereavement. The King in the last few months of his life had striven hard for peace.
“The new Government,” Mr. Wolf continued, “is apparently determined to maintain order, and to that end has concluded a friendly understanding with the Jewish community. The policy of the new Government has been approved by the country, which at the general election has given it an overwhelming majority. The anti-Semitic party will not be represented in the new Chamber, and it has been almost completely destroyed by internal dissension.
“The Committee is much gratified by the success of its own policy, which has always aimed, in Roumania as in other Eastern countries, at a solution of the Jewish question by friendly co-operation between the Jews and their compatriots of other creeds. The Committee has received a cordial telegram in reply from M. Titulesco, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in reply to their congratulations on his appointment,” Mr. Wolf said.
Complaint that fraud has been practiced against Mischa Elman, in real estate transactions, resulting in a loss to him of $225,000 has been made to District Attorney Banton. It was stated allegations will be laid before the Grand Jury to-day.
