Funeral of Ephrati, Late Habima Player, is Held

The funeral of T. Ephrati, member of the Habima players who was drowned in the River Spree yesterday, will be held to-morrow. It was established upon recovery of the body that the drowning was due to cramps and that Ephrati sank before aid could reach him.

EASTERN DISTRICT STARTS B’NAI BRITH CAMPAIGN

Steps to enlist New England in the campaign of District No. 1 to raise its quota of $750,000 for the B’nai Brith Wider Scope Committee’s Fund of $2,000,000 was made during the last week of July under the leadership of Assemblyman Maurice Block, President of District No. 1. Accompanied by Charles Hartman of New York, member of the Executive Committee of the Order, Executive Secretary Dr. Boris D. Bogen and District Secretary Max Levy, Assemblyman Block addressed meetings in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maine.

The first meeting which was held on July 24th, under the joint auspices of the B’nai Brith lodges of New London, Norwich, Williruantic and Middletown, Conn, was attended by nearly 1000 members. Assemblyman Bloeh, Dr. Bogen and Charles Hartman outlined the extensive program of Jewish work undertaken by the Wider Scope Committee.

The next gathering, held on July 27th, at North Attleboro, Mass. was participated in by the lodges of New Bedford, Fall River, Taunton and Brockton, Mass., and of Providence, Woonsocket, Pawtucket and Newport, Rhode Island. “The success of the campaign and therefore the success of the program of the committee, depend upon the response of District No. 1,” Assemblyman Bloch declared. ‘We have been asked to raise $750,000 from the Jews of the State of New York and New England, in which are included New York City, Boston, Providence, Buffalo, Rochester, New Haven, Hartford and scores of thriving, alert and Jewishly-conscious Jewish communities which have always responded generously as they have always led intelligently and loyally in every Jewish cause. I am confident that when the signal is given, the Jews of this district, realizing the full significance of this cause, will respond overwhelmingly.”

The final meeting of the series was held on July 30th, at Old Orchard, at which a rally of the lodges of Maine was held. Judge Max L. Pinansky of Portland, also addressed this gathering.
