Dr. I. M. Rottenberg, founder of People’s Hospital and St. Mark’s Hospital, died Tuesday in his seventy-second year. Born in Hungary, he came to New York in 1880 and began practicing medicine at 280 East Second street. As his practice grew, he interested himself in the development of hospitals.
Dr. Rottenberg was born in Austria in 1856 and studied at the universities of Budapest and Vienna. He came to this country in 1880 and had practiced ever since in New York. In 1903 he founded the Peoples Hospital and he was President of its Medical Board until his death. It was through his instrumentality that the late Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria donated the operating room to the institution.
For thirty-eight years Dr. Rottenberg was Secretary of St. Mark’s Hospital, Second avenue and Twelfth street. For many years he had been a member of the Board of Trustees of Stuyvesant Polyclinic Hospital, 137 Second avenue.
Dr. Rottenberg was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the Eastern Medical Society and the New York County Medical Society.
He was a member of Emanuel Brotherhood, President of the Downtown Talmud Torah Ohab Zedek and a member of Perfect Ashlar Masonic Lodge.
Funeral services will be held today at the Riverside Memorial Chapel, Seventy-sixth street and Amsterdam avenue.
