The amount of $1,093,520 was left by Lady Julia Lewisohn Henry, the widow of Sir Charles Henry and the daughter of the late Leonard Lewisohn of New York to cement the friendship of the United States and Britain by the founding of Anglo-American university scholarships, according to her will, which was filed yesterday.
Lady Henry left a total estate of $1,228,520. After various charitable bequests, the residue was left in trust in perpetuity to maintain scholarships.
ANTI-JEWISH EXCESSES ARE REPORTED FROM LITHUANIA
A wave of anti-Jewish excesses has now overwhelmed the towns and vilages in Lithuania, according to a cable despatch to the “Jewish Morning Journal” from its Kovno correspondent. The correspondent charges that the excesses are perpetrated by the Lithuanian police and that Jews of all ages and classes are being maltreated without pretext. The mistreatment of the Jewish population in the smaller towns is traced directly to the responsibility of the chiefs of police.
In many cases the excesses assumed the acute form of a pogrom. Jewish stores are being ruined. Such excesses took place in Pilvishok, Ponleviezh, Kroki, and in Kovno.
The Jewish press is strictly censored. However, the Kovno Yiddish daily “Die Stimme” published a protest, appealing to Jewish public opinion abroad.
