New negotiations for the granting of the concession to exploit the mineral resources of the Dead Sea are progressng, according to a report published by the “London Times.” All bids for the Dead Sea concession which were submitted before October 1927 were rejected. The new negotiations are being carried on with Englishmen. The negotiations have attained such a stage that an agreement in principle was reached and only the details await settlement.
The governments of Palestine and Transjordania have already agreed to the conditions of the concession. It is expected that the names of the concessionaires and the agreement will be made public soon.
The initial cost of starting the work of the dead Sea exploitation will require $750,000 it was stated. It is expected that the exploitation of the Dead Sea will open new possibilities not only for Palestine but also for Transjordania and will perhaps be instrumental in opening a new commercial route to India and the Far East, other tha the Suez Canal. New railways will have to be constructed to carry the salts from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean. It is possible that an electric railway will be constructed from the Dead Sea to Beisan which is already connected by rail with Haifa.
