The new Citizenship Law, which has been adopted by the Sejm, giving citizenship to all persons resident in Latvia since August 1st, 1914, and who were in the country on November 18th, when the Latvian Republic was proclaimed, is to be put to a referendum before it can enter into force.
The opponents of the Law, who have been fighting against citizenship being given to the thousands of Jews in Latvia, who are technically aliens under the present citizenship law, have been collecting signatures on a petition demanding that a referendum be held on the new Law. They have succeeded in obtaining the requisite minimum number of signatures required to enforce the referendum and arrangements will accordingly have to be made for a referendum to be held.
