The act of Sholom Schwartzbard in slaying Semion Petlura was not only one of vengeance but will be a medium of prevention of new massacres, is the opinion of Maxim Gorki, famous Russian novelist, in a letter published by the French press, today.
Gorki states that anti-Semitism is a feeling unknown to the population of Russia, it having been caused by the policy of the Czarist government. The same was true of the Petlura regime. Petlura’s assassination will prevent new massacres, he writes.
The “Action Francaise” today demands that French authorities restrict the naturalization of foreigners in France.
The “Vozrozdjenie,” organ of the Russian Right groups in Paris, today accuses Petlura of having been guilty of “a Russian cultural pogrom.” The other Russian papers express fear of Ukrainian vengeance against Schwartzbard.
