The present immigration laws will not be amended by Congress, according to Waiter W. Husband, Assistant Secretary of Labor, speaking Sunday night at the opening of the $75,000 campaign of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigration Aid Society in this district.
Mr. Husband declared that it is his opinion the laws will not be changed and he would advise European Jews to emigrate to South America, where the country is sparsely populated.
Sever hundred and fifty guests were present at the dinner at the Hotel Benjamin Franklin.
The campaign which will continue one week will be carried on under the leadership of Harry Fels, Chairman and Mrs. Reba Shestack, Chairman of the Women’s Division. The $75,000 goal is part of the $500,000 national quota which Hias is seeking.
Among the speakers at the dinner were Congressman Benjamin F. Golder, John L. Bernstein, chairman of the Hias campaign and Isidore Hershfeld, Hias representative in Washington.
