Julius Rosenwald intends to give Chicago a model housing development equalling in size the $4,000,000 project recently announced by the Marshall Field estate. Mr. Rosenwald who for years has striven to abolish the slums, already has acquired properties on the South Side which may be used as a site. Although neither Mr. Rosenwald nor his associates could be reached last night, it is understood that announcement of his program will be made soon after construction on the first unit of the Marshall Field project commences.
Occupancy of the first unit of the Marshall Field garden apartments is expected by October I. To speed work the city council will be asked on Monday to issue a special building permit. In determining who shall occupy the garden flats, persons whose incomes exceed $4,000 will not be considered. Preference will be given families with children for whose benefit there will be more than three acres of gardens and playgrounds. No religious discrimination will be exercised to supply references of moral desirability.
It is understood that execution of the Rosewald project is contingent on the success of the Marshall Field development.
