A million dollars to lengtnen the span of life through the study of degenerative diseases incurred by persons past 50 has been given to the University of Chicago by Mr. and Mrs. Albert D. Lasker. Announcement was made at the home of Dr. Max Mason, president of the University.
The fund will be known as “The Lasker Foundation for Medical Research”, the $1,000,000 being an initial endowment.
The foundation will be devoted to determining the causes of death from cardio-Vascular ailments, cancer and Bright’s disease.
Circumstances surrounding the death last November of his close friend, Douglas Smith at the age of 66, influenced Mr. Lasker, Dr. Mason said. Mr. Lasker has been interested in Medical Research for some time. In 1922 he contributed $25,000 to the American Society for the control of cancer.
