Seek Ways of Extending and Improving Settlements (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
A conference of Jewish peasants in White Russia was opened here yesterday. Representatives of the Jewish Section of the Communist Party and of the Comzet, the governmental department for settling Jews on the land, participated in the discussion of plans for the extension and improvement of the settlements. A notable feature of the conference was the participation of a large number of women delegates.
The conference was convoked by the Nationalities Commission of the Central Executive of White Russia. The number of delegates to the conference was fixed at 170 in a circular issued to the Nationalities Committees in various districts, giving instructions with regard to the arrangements for the election of delegates. Ten delegates were to be appointed from the district of Polotzk, 17 from the district of Vitebsk, 15 from the district of Mozir, 20 from Orsha, 25 from Homel, 27 from Mohilev, 26 from Bobruisk, and 30 from Minsk.
All the delegates were required to be peasants who are active in social work in the collectives and settlements. About twenty percent of the seats were to be reserved for women peasants who were engaged in work in the fields.
