Negro Play Gives Rise to Anti-Semitic Protest (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
An anti-Semitic demonstration which lasted several hours in front of the Opera House accompanied the opening performance of a drama of negro life entitled “Jenny.”
The Vienna Hakenkruezler press, in reviewing the play, injected race hatred into the criticism, declaring that the drama of negro life is an expression of the “triumph of America’s powerful alliance with Jewry over Germanism.”
Hundreds of demonstrants marched through the square singing anti-Semitic songs and denouncing what they termed “America’s negro culture and Jewish negro taste.” The police restored order, arresting many of the demonstrants.
