The Polish authorities are engaging in repressions against the Bloc of National Minorities, persons in close touch with the Bloc who have just arrived here from Warsaw declare. Under the conditions, they say, there is no electoral freedom in the country. Pressure is being exercised by officials to prevent the Minorities Bloc holding public meetings or circulating its proclamations through the press or in leaflets or other publications.
In many towns proprietors of cinemas and other halls have been warned by the District Chiefs not to let their halls for election meetings of the Minorities Bloc on penalty of losing their permits. An election meeting was to have been held in the Nowoszczi Theatre in Warsaw, with Deputies Gruenbaum and Hartglass as the principal speakers. At the last moment a force of police was brought up and no one was allowed inside. When complaints were made, the authorities said that the building had been found unsafe and the meeting could therefore not be held. Nevertheless, the usual theatre be held. Nevertheless, the usual theatre performance took place in the building the same evening.
The Election Committee of the Minorities Bloc rented the Scala Theatre for the purpose of holding election meetings there three times a week during the month of February. The proprietors of the theatre have now informed the Election Committee that unfortunately they have found it necessary to cancel the agreement because the building is not strong enough for large gatherings. The usual performances at the theatre are being continued.
