M. H. Davis was elected president of the Federation of Synagogues at a meeting held here tonight. He succeeds the late Lord Swaythling.
A number of delegates objected that the motion was unconstitutional since Councillor Davis is treasurer and the two offices should not be held by one person. The objection was defeated by a majority of 24, and he was elected president of the Federation and treasurer of the Burial Society.
Councillor Davis, who then occupied the chair, said that he was proud that they had broken down the tradition which existed previously that they should be ruled by people of position, wealth and title. They were now ruling themselves. The Federation, he said, would identify itself with the work of Zionism. It would also take up the Schechita question. Their program would in addition contain social services in the form of lectures, which would be arranged for the Jewish youth in the East End.
WOMEN’S COUNCIL CREATES SOCIAL SERVICE FELLOWSHIP
A $1,500 maintenance fellowship to the Training School for Jewish Social Work, New York City, has been made available by the National Council of Jewish Women, according to an announcement by Maurice J. Karpf, director of the school.
The award of this fellowship which includes tuition, is limited to qualified candidates who will pledge themselves to work in the various social service activities of the National Council of Jewish Women for a minimum period of two years after graduation.
“The fellowship will enable the successful candidate to prepare himself for the type of social service activities carried on by the National Council of Jewish Women,” declared Mr. Karpf.
Application for the Council fellowship should be made either directly to the school or to Mrs. S. M. Blumauer, 231 N. 24 Street, Portland, Oregon.
