The ruling of the Jaffa District Court that Jewish municipalities in Palestine cannot, under the terms of the mandate enforce Sabbath observance by city ordinances, was upheld today by the Palestine Supreme Court.
The ruling was handed down in the famous case of a Tel Aviv storekeeper, Altschuler, who started the action against the Tel Aviv municipality because it had fined him £2 for violating the municipal ordinance by keeping his store open on Saturday. Mr. Altschuler’s counsel contended that the municipal ordinance was illegal, because it is contradictory to Article 15 of the Mandate, since the ordinance establishes a sort of discrimination by prohibiting trading on the Sabbath to Jews only.
It was stated that the Palestine government will in all probability appeal the case to the Privy Council.
FRANKEL TO REPRESENT STATE CHARITIES AT PARIS MEETING
Dr. Lee K. Frankel, vice-president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, was designated one of the delegates of the New York State Charities Aid Association to the International Conference of Social Work to be held in Paris in July.
Dr. Frankel and Homer Folks, secretary, were elected to represent the association, at the annual meeting of the Board of Managers.
