Sir Gilbert Clayton Denies He May Be Palestines Next High Commissioner

Rumors to the effect that Sir Gilbert Clayton, British expert on Near East afirs and at one time Civil Secretary of the Palestine government, would be the next High Commissioner of Palestine after Lord Plumer’s retirement was denied by Sir Gilbert who arrived here today from the Arabian peninsula.

Sir Gilbert just returned from Jeddah where he conferred with Ibn Sand, Sultan of Nejd and King of Hedjas. In an interview with the representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, he stated that he knows nothing concerning the rumors of his appointment to succeed Lord Plumer and that he thinks this unlikely.

Sir Gilbert attended the session of the Vaad Leumi, National Council of Palestine Jews, which asked him to take an interest in the outstanding Palestine problems.

He stated that he will renew negotiations with Ibn Saud in July. The question of the Akaba Hedjas railway was not discussed, he stated.
