An interdenominational tangle developed in the trial of Aaron Natan, aged father of a ten year old girl, in the attempt of the girl’s two brothers to annul her marriage to a Moslem Arab.
The intermarriage of the Jewish girl to the Arab attracted wide attention in Palestine when it became known that the 91 year old father, a resident of Acre, sold his ten year old daughter for £ 30 in accordance with the custom prevailing among the Arabs, to the Moslem storekeeper, Assadi, as a bride for his son. One of the brothers of the brothers of the bride instituted proceedings with the Chief Rabbinate of Palestine, claiming that his father was mentally unbalanced and seeking guardianship of the child to prevent her marriage. Before the formalities were completed, the marriage was consummated.
The case came up today before the District Court of Haifa. The father sprang a surprise on his sons when he testified that he was no longer a Jew, having embraced the Moslem religion 26 years ago. Counsel for the sons maintained that the father was still within the Jewish faith. The proceedings were adjourned by an order of the court for an investigation at Acre. If it is found that Aaron Natan had embraced Mohammedanism, the case will have to be transferred to the Moslem court.
GUGGENHEIM HONORED BY NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
Daniel Guggenheim, founder of the Daniel Guggenheim Foundation for the Promotion of Aeronautics received the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science from New York University at the commencement exercises held on Wednesday.
In conferring the degree Chancellor Elmer Ellsworth Brown said: “Daniel Guggenheim, after spending your younger manhood penetrating the depths of the earth for valuable metal you are directing the thought of your more mature years to the clouds and the stars.”
Hundreds of Jewish students were among the 2,759 who were graduated from the various colleges of the university.
More than $500,000 was received by the United Jewish Gampaign during the month of May toward the Emergency Fund of $3,100,000, David A. Brown, national chairman, announced. Checks have been received form twenty states in response to the appeal to “Borrow and Advance” to help the Joint Distribution Committee continue its work without interruption during the summer months.
