Jewish Deputy Challenged to Duel by Two Hungarian Government Officials

Paul Sandor, Hungarian Jewish Liberal leader and member of parliament, was challenged to duels by State Secretary Daranyi and by the chief of the government press department, Szuby.

The demands for “satisfaction” were the result of Deputy Sandor’s address recently in parliament in connection with the address of Admiral Horthy, before the University of Budapest, in which Hungary’s merchant class were maligned. Speaking in parliament, Sandor was reported to have said that he has the suspicion that business corruption, charged in the Regent’s address, may be more easily found in the Prime Minister’s immediate environment. The two government officials took this remark as a personal affront.
