Speaking last night at Carmarthen, the constituency which Lord Melchett represented in Parliament until his elevation to the peerage which has caused a by-election there, David Lloyd George replied to a speech delivered by Lord Melchett in the constituency a few nights ago.
The mere fact that a man changes his name,” he said, “is not sufficient reason for changing his principles. It is not so long ago that he attacked the present Government he now asks you to support. I have a great respect for the race to which he belongs. I stood up for it during the war. I have a genuine regard for that great race, but there would have been no Jew in the House of Commons or in the House of Lords had it not been for the Liberal Party. They were excluded by legislation from voting and it was the Liberal Party which fought the battle of Jewish emancipation and enabled them for the first time to get into Parliament.”
Max Rhoade of Washington D. C., was unanimously re-elected national president of the Avukah, American Student Zionist Federation, at the conclusion of the third annual three-day Convention of that organization at the William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Other officers elected were Samuel Blumenfield and Rabbi Mitchell S. Fisher, New York; Joseph Shubow, Boston; Hyman Smoler, Chicago, and William B. Rudenko, Philadelphia, vice-presidents; Alex Whynman, New York, treasurer and Emanuel Aaronson, Washington, D. C., Assistant Treasurer, Charles Rosenbloom of Pittsburgh was chosen acting treasurer of the permanent Board of Trustees which is to be formed next fall. At a luncheon at the Zionist Convention on Monday, addressed by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise and Louis Linsky, $5,600 was raised toward Avukah’s $15,000 annual budget for its activities among the Jewish students in the colleges.
The annual report of the president, whowed that thirty chapters comprise the Avukah organization, in forty universities and colleges.
The publication of a Zionist Anthology, and a handbook on Zionism, as texts for conduct of the organization’s cultural activity, was recomended, It was announced that there would shortly be issued by the Avukah, jointly with the Zeire Zion a journal dealing with the “He-Chalutz” in connection with the tenth anniversary of the latter organization.
Rabbis holding Chaplaincles in the Officers Reserve Corps will hold services at the Citizens Military Training Camps which hundreds of Jewish young men will attend during the summer.
Rabbi S. J. Schwab, of Wichita Falls, Tex, will officiate at Camp Fort Sam Houston, Tex.; Rabbi Frank L. Rosenthal, of Columbus, Ga., at Camp McClellan, Ala.; Rabbi Harry R. Richmond, of Paducah, Ky., at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; and Rabbi Julius Silberfeld, of Newark, N. J., and Rabbi Benjamin Tintner, of New York City, at Plattsburg Barracks, N. Y. The Jewish Welfare Board will cooperate with the rabbis in the promotion of the religious and social welfare of the men.
