The nomination of Governor Smith of New York as Democratic candidate in the forthcoming Presidential election is taking the religious issue out of the forthcoming Presidential election, said Dr. Samuel Schulman, of Temple Emanuel of New York, who has arrived in Paris on his way to Berlin to attend the meeting of the World Union of Progressive Judaism.

“The majority of delegates attendir the National Democratic Convention at Houston, Texas,” he said, “were Protestants, so that the placing of their stamp of approval on Governor Smith means that they are not considering religion in their choice.

In discussing the Republican situation Rabbi Schulman said that the choice of Secretary of Commerce Hoover as candidate was a great achievement on the part of the party. “Hoover,” he said, “is a new type of man to run for such a high office, and in my opinion, he is the best suited man in the country to run as a candidate. He represents education, efficiency in its highest and he is more of a business man than a politician. He has undertaken some of the most difficult tasks both at home and abroad and yet when they were completed praiseworthy comment was heard from every side. Another thing Mr. Hoover is a traveller. He is familiar with the workings of many foreign governments, a decided asset for our next Chief Executive.”
